Based on a doujinshi written by Takashi Okazaki in the late 90's, Afro Samurai is a creative collaboration between Samuel L. Jackson, Takashi Okazaki and Japanese animation company Gonzo, a division of GDH, with the intentions of creating an anime series for US and Japanese markets. Scheduled to premiere on Spike TV (a US cable station). With the Academy Award-nominated actor Samuel L. Jackson already signed on to co-produce and to do the lead character's voice, this is a first in a potentially interesting trend. |

In the sixth year of the Kan’ei era (1629), at the beginning of the Edo period, a samurai was hired to settle a grievance in the castle of Suruga. Appearing in a tournament which contraventioned all of the existing dueling laws to allow the use of real swords, the blind one-armed lame samurai starts a battle which brings together for the last time two mighty swordsmen whose bloody intertwined past is as beautiful and as gruesome as the scarred wounds that adorn their bodies and souls. |

The Mings (Chinese) come to a remote part of Sengoku-era feudal Japan with money to buy the cooperation of the locals, and fierce warriors to subdue those they can't buy. One of the things they need for their secret plan is the young boy, Kotaro, who goes into hiding in the countryside with his dog Tobimaru. Cornered in their hiding place by the Mings, they are saved by a wandering samurai who calls himself "Nanashi" ("nameless") who is haunted by nightmares of his violent past. The three of them are forced to discover the Ming's dreadful purpose in a conflict that pits the best swordsmen of Japan and China against each other. |
