Tragedy: (Genre) Animes of this type have tragic events as an important part of the story, and usually will show how the characters are dealing with the consequences of that tragedy (more or less successfully). This doesn't necessarily mean the story cannot have a happy ending as the tragedy might occur during the first episodes of even before story begins; as such this category information need not be a spoiler (unless the tragedy were to be a surprise for the audience in a mystery-style show).
Surreal: (Style) Anime that have the "intense irrational reality of a dream" qualify for this category.
Dark: (Style) Titles that are dismal or gloomy in nature qualify for this category.

Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion |
Rent | An alternative ending to the TV series, replacing the episodes 25 and 26 by a movie which now answers many of the questions left open in the series: Now that the last angel has been defeated, what will happen next as NERV has lost its purpose but still has control over two EVAs powerful enough to destroy the world as we know it? Will SEELE allow Ikari Gendou to stay in control? And what was all this story all about? |

A secret organization, NERV, builds giant mechs called Evas that can only be piloted by 14 year olds. These EVAs are used to fight against alien beings called "angels" that come to earth and cause destruction. Shinji Ikari, the son of the CEO of NERV, is picked up to become the "3rd children" (no typo!) and pilot one of these awesome mechs. However, being the pilot takes an emotional toll on him.... |

Sola's story revolves around Yorito Morimiya, the main protagonist, who is a young boy attending high school. He loves taking pictures of the sky at any time of day and any time of the year. One day, Yorito decides to take a picture of the sunrise overlooking the bay, but is deterred when he meets a strange girl trying to force a vending machine that stole her money to give her what she tried to buy — a can of tomato juice. Yorito helps her with forcing the machine while attempting to strike up conversation with her, despite it being four in the morning. Yorito tells her why he is here, but by the time he has forced the can out of the machine, the girl has mysteriously vanished. |
