Watch Kamio Misuzu is a female high school student who's missed many classes, so many that's she's thought of by her classmates as a delinquent. Yet she volunteers to do fieldwork on the local history of the town she lives in, and chooses to do the legend story of a miko named Uraha, a palace guard named Ryuuya, and the princess held captive at that palace named Kannabi no Mikoto (Kanna). At the same time, a drifter named Kunisaki Yukito-san comes to town with his small puppet, with which he can make it magically move. Drawn by fate, Yukito-san ends up assisting Misuzu with her fieldwork and the two fall in love, following a similar patter as Ryuuya and Kanna did many centuries before.

Kirie is the shy but violent girl next door who has a crush on Yukinari. Lisa is the local witch who believes Yukinari is her destined mate. Fukuyama is Lisa's brother who believes he is god's gift to women. Koyomi is a girl from Seiren looking for men to take back to her women-only home world. Tomoka is the child prodigy who's helping out Koyomi. Maharu is Miharu's grown-up sister who is looking for a husband.

She warns Mai not to go to the school and to hand over the girl they found. After a big fight (sinking the ferry) Mai, the girl and her sword suddenly appear at Fuuka academy. It might have something to do with the red birth mark both girls seem to have. Is Mai a HiME? (HiME stands for "Highly-advanced Materializing Equipment")
