Based on a Japanese Folk-tale which evidently enough is based on the Chinese folk-tale of "Journey to the West" Genso Maden Saiyuki is placed in a universe where Humans and Youkai(Demons) once lived togather in peace and harmony. Now that the peace is disturbed and the Youkai are on an unknown bloodlusted killing spree the Gods have decided to send Genjo Sanzo a high priest to the east to find out the cause of the "disturbance", with in the begining of his Journey he picks up a 3 companions, Gokuu, a whiny and highly annoying youkai, Sha-Gojyo, a half youkai/human who wields a badass scythe thingy and Cho-Hakkai, a human turned youkai, who seems to be very tolerant of his obscure travelling companions. The thing is that Sanzo isn't what you call the most holy of holy priest.(for example: drinking, smoking and killing without a second thought).

The year is Century 2345. The civilization of Earth is at about the level it was during World War I. Long ago, humanity traveled through space, but the people of Earth have long forgotten about that. However, an advanced civilization still exists in cities on the moon, and now this Moonrace, in desperate need of resources, sets its sights back on its home planet. Three Moonrace teenagers, Loran Cehack, Keith Laijie, and Fran Doll, are sent to make sure that a return is even feasible, and are followed two years later by the invading Dianna Counter forces. Now, five thousand years after humanity first traveled into space, a new war is brewing between the Earthlings defending their homes, the Moonrace looking to settle on Earth, and other members of the Moonrace who believe a return to Earth may revive a nightmare from humanity's forgotten past...
