Hello from New York City. I'm married, male, born in 1967, and as of about October '03 newly hooked on anime. I was always casually interested, but as I wandered the aisles of my local Suncoast, I started picking up manga titles on a whim, then started buying anime of the mangas I liked, and it was all downhill from there. (Damn you, Suncoast! ;-) My biggest favorites are Cowboy Bebop, Love Hina, and Ai Yori Aoshi. I've been reading Maison Ikkoku and Great Teacher Onizuka, and will probably pick those up as well. I'm not huge on mecha stories, but if the plot, characters, art, etc. are good, I won't reject them out of hand, either.

Violence? I don't mind, if the story elements are well-assembled and justify it. Nudity? Same. Hentai/ecchi? I don't reject them outright, but I find some of them downright scary or frighteningly bad, and thus don't generally seek them out. Sub or dub? Well, I think they can co-exist in the world of DVDs - I don't discriminate. I often watch an episode or movie both ways for the different perspectives they provide to the story. Let's face it - dubbing has broadened the overall market, which is a good thing for fans of both subs and dubs. I just wonder sometimes about those wacky Southern or quasi-Indian accents some dubbers use... ;-)

PS: I'm also seeking out penfriends, especially women born from 1962-1977, with whom to discuss anime and manga. My recent tastes do lean more to the romantic comedies/shoujo (though not entirely!), and I'd value a feminine perspective, perhaps even some recommendations. I won't turn down male correspondents automatically, I just often find the other gender's perspective refreshingly honest and insightful, and since my wife and female friends aren't into manga or anime, I must seek it elsewhere.

Buy Fujiwara Chiyoko was once a major movie star who dominated the Japanese cinema world. Thirty years ago, she abruptly disappeared from the screen and from public view. One of her greatest admirers, Tachibana Genya, a documentary filmmaker, has traveled to the isolated mountain lodge where she makes her home to interview her. He presents her with an old key that once meant everything to her, and as if that key had opened a door to her memories Chiyoko starts telling the story of her life, interweaving moments from her past and future and passing through the boundary between reality and the movies that had made up so much of her life, guiding the audience through a millennium of Japanese history.
