In a world devastated by the melting of the ice caps, the sudden reappearance of Atlantis has also revived an ancient enemy, the Fallen Angels, who now raid the few remaining cities for human captives. Living in isolated armed encampments, people have survived by recovering a weapon of a forgotten age called ‘vector machines’. Piloted by those rare teenage candidates who are gifted with an ‘Element’ ability, they have the mental ability to control the transforming flying craft. Fighting in three person teams under a leader, who has the ability to fuse the three vectors together into an ‘Aquerion’, a weapon of incredible power.
An almost forgotten legend speaks of the coming reincarnation of the hero Apollous, a winged warrior who last appeared some 12,000 years ago, and who will reappear with the rising of Atlantis to fight again to save humanity. The princess, Silvia, and a fellow pilot Pierre stumble across a pack of street orphans, who struggle to survive by raiding nearby warehouses and stealing food stocks. Their leader is a rude and undisciplined boy named of Apollo, but he shows strong signs of having the 'Element' ability. When confronting Apollo, Pierre teases Silvia (who is the reincarnation of Apollous’ lover,) about how this obnoxious and stinking boy just might be her lost lover, an idea which she just refuses to even consider. At least until a Fallen Angel attack allows Apollo to pilot a vector and he leads them into battle yelling “Sousei Gattai!! Go Aquarion”, fusing the three vectors into the ‘Solar Aquerion’, the ultimate weapon.

Oh please ...no...not again!! Another Mega Mecha Series!!! I think that I saw most of this mecha-action in the transformers series of about 15 years ago. And if I hear one more pilot scream “Sousei Gattai!! Go Aquarion” just once more, I am going to get a frontal lobotomy, just so I can finish up watching the episode.

Actually this series is really not that bad .. yes, it has been done before (about 200 times in other series) but the special effects are the singular redemption of this series. They really put a lot of effort and attention into the mecha and alien Fallen Angel scenes. I read somewhere that about two dozen special effects teams worked on this, and they even credit for a hair stylist (for anime characters?) The characters are mostly OK, but the tension between Silvia and Apollo is just too canned and predictable. I had to chuckle when the vectors combined and the female pilots squealed in an almost orgasmic voice about the pleasure of the Aquerion fusion experience. I will continue watching it just in case it gets better, but I am not expecting much.

If you are really into sci-fi anime with a better story line and just as good special effects, then you should really check out Xenosaga - The Animation. It was a lot more entertaining and a lot less predictable.

Well, at least we know that much of this series' footage will make it into the computer game.
