This OVA isn't exactly playing between episodes 8 and 9: The first episode rewrites a part of episode 8 (similar to episode 10 looking from a different angle at events that happened earlier in the series), repeating some of the events from there and inserting certain other events (and thus explaining what made certain of the events of episodes 8 and 9 happen, such as Kanna running away from the cockerel). The second episode is completely new material though.

By fleshing out the characters a bit more, these two episodes give a little more life to the story, and as such are a nice watch. On the other side, they contain significantly more slapstick elements (such as Kanna juggling with real stones and hitting herself with them) than would reasonably suit the atmosphere of their desperate abscondence; the same goes for a number of fanservice elements (such as Ryuuya and Kanna constantly quarreling about the mikoto being flat-chested, or the scenes hinting at Kanna potentially undressing). While being hardly appropriate for this scenario, this special (most notably the second part) manages to present a marvellous combination of funny scenes with surprisingly serious interludes now and then, and as such was a very nice experience almost on par with Aa! Megami-sama! TV.

One big downside should be mentioned: Ryuuya's story about his childhood clearly contradicts the TV series where we saw him together with his mother. I deducted one point from Series Story because of this.

This is a special which further fleshes out the characters of Kanna, Ryuuha, and Kanna. The limited number of episodes for the feudal arc hindered any kind of fleshing out for their characters in Air and this special does a decent enough job of expanding their journey up to before they find Kanna's mother. It does incorporate some comedy to mix in with serious moments as Devil Doll explained in her review.

This special provides some breathing room from the tragedy and emotional drama found in the TV series so it is worth a watch if you wanted an expansion to the feudal arc.

As mentioned in the synopsis, this TV-special takes place between episodes 8 & 9 of the TV series. As such, we get more fleshing out of Ryuuya-dono, Uraha-dono, and Kanna-sama. Some of the stuff we already saw and some of the stuff is new. This background story, while nice, still isn't the part of AIR that gripped me so. Still, I did enjoy seeing this trio again and learning the additional information.

Bottom line: If you liked episodes 8 & 9 of the TV series, you'll enjoy this special a lot.
