(Nine episodes watched): At first Ryoko, a girl who effortlessly beats the crap out of countless people (though to be fair, they're the ones who started it), didn't appeal to me very much. As I rewatched the first episode in dubbed form, I noticed how nicely timed the jokes were and how fun the SD comedy was. I generally prefer subtitled anime, but this seems like a show that somehow works just as well in dubbed mode. I suspect that Wendee Lee can be thanked for this--shows that she's involved in tend to be well dubbed and seeing her name instills a bit of confidence in me. Another distinctive voice was that of David Lucas. One thing which immediately caught my eye was how ultra cute the female characters are. That sassy girl who wants Ryoko's boyfriend is a fun character who you can't help liking. There's plenty of pantsu fanservice. Fight scenes seem well animated--when stills aren't employed, that is. As for the plot, I still have little idea where it's going after nine episodes, but I haven't lost interest either. Perhaps that's because this is a much more silly show than I had expected, and relies more on weird comedy than drama and plot (which is fine with me). Ryoko finds herself drafted to play the absurd role of "Oyster Lulu", a restaraunt mascot, which was hilarious. The climactic scene of episode nine, "Super Transformation: The Seven Witches" made me laugh so much that it brought tears to my eyes. This is a fun show which I look forward to watching. P.S: I still hope to rent the final DVD some day, it's just that my rent-DVDs-by-mail service is somehow missing it! I bought the (Tokyo-Pop - R1/USA - English dubbed release) boxed set a while ago and I am happy to have it in my anime library. While this series will win the strongest kudos with the teen-crowd, it probably would only rate as a fun <rent> for any serious anime fan. Focusing on a story line of a strong samurai girl holding hidden romantic feelings for her kendo-club sempai, the other mystical elements of the story leave a lot of unanswered questions and open issues, but it does prove to be charming and simple story of fun fights and strangeness that will provide a few hours of anime distraction. This series is well worth the watch, but remember not to expect much in tying off the lose ends and .. just enjoy the story. It works very well at this level!! OH!! .. while this series does have some modest measure of fan service, it is still should be rated PG10+, (Hey! remember that is a Tokyo-Pop release and they don't really license any of the new, strange and fun anime series.....)
