The adventures of some 5th graders as they go around in school. Very adult situations considering that they are 11. It appears to be Azumanga Daioh except everyone is 7 years younger. They are very innocent but they keep getting caught in extremely suggestive poses.

There is

  • The Girl who nibbles on things when her teeth are coming out (Especially people)
  • The Boy who was caught looking at Porn and he tells everyone that it's for the 'Collarbones'
  • The Girl with 'Collarbones'.
  • The Girl who is a sports freak but is afraid of the dark.
  • The Girl who is concerned about her weight.
  • The Girl who is a childhood friend of the boy and has feelings for him.

It's all very innocent! Just funny!

  • Drama: Low (daily school life situations, pranks, and misunderstandings)
  • Comedy: High (that's what this show is mostly about)
  • Action: None (nothing even vaguely similar to violence)
  • SciFi: None (plain old world, normal people)
  • Ecchi: Med (nothing beyond pantsu shots and a nude back of a girl, except for what your imagination will make of certain scenes...)
This is Azumanga Daioh meets Green Green, just with 5th graders. Five very short stories in each episode, so it's very episodic and focused on the situation comedy. The combination of "innocence" and "teasing" makes this series quite funny even for me, although there's not much story all in all. Then again, the episodic nature of the show doesn't bother me that much because the individual parts show the adventures, pranks and delusions of school kids of this age and thus form a consistent picture anyway, even without visible development or Series Story (while Ryouta and Chika actually are the leads amongst this group of kids and their relation is to be investigated during the show). The final episode is the least episodic one, completely focusing on the "couple" - and as such the best one for me. The ending is really sweet.

Cute Art, Animation with excessive SD elements (the characters appear as adults when they "understand"), the Music is hardly noticeable but appropriate for the mostly light-hearted atmosphere (and the calm, melodic ED song is very nice). The Characters, while obviously not being too deep due to their age, are likeable and we get to see their thoughts in a number of scenes (which I always prefer to mindless action).

One definive plus of this show is the ecchi element. Yes, there are very adult scenes at times (like Ryouta in the sports accessory room, or when he accidentally spilled milk over some girl). This show got almost the same "Forbin classification" from me as Hanaukyo Maid Tai La Verite did - but unlike the blatant fan-service of all too many other shows with frontal nudity and huge boobs, the perversion here is mostly triggered by the dirty minds of the audience: This is a great show to hold a mirror up to yourself. And the situations causing these thoughts are usually bad luck, not due to the immense stupidity of the characters, and therefore give the audience the feeling this could actually happen in real life.

All in all, one of the few only-comedies that I really like (resulting in a high mark for Episode Story), mostly because it doesn't have some of those unnervingly stupid characters in Azumanga Daioh.

Rent Stretch #
(All episodes watched):

Reading these reviews, I got the impression that Kyou no Go no Ni (let's just call it KnGnN) might be the sort of show you turn to when you've become addicted to school comedy but you've already watched every episode of Azumanga Daioh and School Rumble (twice). To a certain extent that's true, but it also became clear that comedy isn't the only purpose of this show. The anxiety and heartache of coming of age are made clear while, for the most part, the jokes of KnGnN aren't in the same league as the aforementioned series. I got the strange feeling--it's hard to put into words--that this series wasn't trying all that hard to get me to laugh. I don't know exactly what was missing, but something(s) which are done as a matter of course in other anime comedies wasn't present here. Maybe this was intentional, and the makers were confident that they didn't need to employ any "tricks" to boost their jokes. One segment which did get me to laugh out loud was "Super Balls" (no, not about those kind of "balls"), perhaps because when it seemed to be over with the usual modest joke, another first-class one came out of nowhere. Misunderstandings and slapstick resulting in embarassing, panty-flashing spills are commonplace. Somehow, I wouldn't describe these as fanservice since they are depicted in more of a slice-of-life manner than a crass, vulgar one. Though it didn't turn out to be exactly what I'd been expecting or hoping for, KnGnN is a good show in other ways, and I'm glad to watch it. Everyone who enjoys school comedy should see it once.

School comedy done in a more slice-of-life style than usual

Unevaluated Forbin #

Drama : None
Comedy : High
Scifi : None
Action : None
Ecchi : Low/Med

Episode 1 released and it's pretty good. Magikano is wrapping up so this might replace it.

Episode 2 out. Wow this is months in the release (Like Dokuro Chan). The 2nd episode covers Balls, Milk, Laughs, and Childhood friends. Very funny.

What's really funny is each situation is VERY ADULT. But the children don't know that. It just happens that way. Like in the milk episode, a girl ends up naked (because her clothes were stolen) and the boy gets caught with her in a room (he walked in looking for someone else). Of coursse he gets pounded for being a perv...hehe
