This anime story is based on an adult fujoshi (an otaku of boys-love stories) as she juggles her yaoi obsession and her otaku boyfriend. When her boys-love obsession takes over, it manifests itself as a green furry monster (pictured at right). Kojima is based on the monster-mascot for a shopping arcade that happens to be named "801." "801" in the manga's title is a pun, since the number "801" can be read as "Ya-o-i" in Japanese.
Kyoto Animation (the anime team who worked on Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Clannad (TV) and Lucky Star) will be producing this 2009 anime series based on Ajico Kojima's manga - Tonari no 801 chan .
