This is a whimsical, good-natured little story that starts out as sci-fi in the classic H.G. Wells style and ends up as a romance. Miss China herself is a wonderful character, confident and able to take care of herself without being obnoxious about it. All the other characters are likeable too, and the romance is charmingly played. Hint: the ring isn't what you think it will be! The character designs are very good, realistic but with a sense of personality. The backgrounds are also nicely atmospheric. However, the costumes on the Western characters are skimpy on detail and not very historically accurate, which detracts somewhat from the overall effect. I've only been able to see the dub, which has good performances for the main characters, although some of the minor ones are not so great. Bottom line: Not flashy or profound, but definitely worth seeking out if you're in the mood for something sweet and fun. Last updated Wednesday, April 10 2002.
