Justy Ueki Tylor, age 20, is a man with absolutely no qualifications for the military and with no serious concerns or worries in his life, but he does have an incredible streak of luck. During a time of war, it falls upon his crew and command-staff to have to both endure and survive his irresponsible command when he is assigned to be the captain of the United Planets Space Forces destroyer, Soyokaze. With the commanders of both the UPSF and the hostile Raalgon space forces committed to the destruction of Captain Tylor, he has to call upon all of his skills(?) to find a path to permit his crew and ship survive to fight another day, again .and again and again.

This series might best be considered a comedic space opera.

First of all, this is a really neat show, featuring a wide variety of interesting and well-developed characters, and, on a more basic level, having a style that is all it's own. What other shows does it most resemble? Perhaps a sort of cross between Star Trek and McHale's Navy (are you old enough to remember that one?). The technology is cool as well--especially the animation of spaceships hauling ass in the opening sequence.

After witnessing Tylor and the Soyokaze achieve an incredible escape from a seemingly hopeless situation, Raalgon commander Ru Baraba Dom provides an excellent summary of the Tylor enigma: "Justy Ueki Tylor... It might be said that he was born to be a Captain. If that [escape] was intentional, he's the ultimate strategist, and deserves to be a Captain. And if that maneuver was done completely by accident, then he's blessed with the greatest luck known". The point of ICT seems to be that a lucky, carefree man can achieve everything a professional soldier can, and then some. So why be a soldier? From what I've read, life in Japan seems to be very firmly structured--your life is planned out in advance, and being "irresponsible" is simply not an option. So, many citizens of Japan might secretly long to behave as Captain Tylor does. It's interesting that the earth forces are portrayed as not neccessarily the "good guys" in this series. Admirals Fuji and Mifune cannot be trusted, for example. Nor are the Raalgon the "bad guys", since among their ranks are such admirable characters as Azalyn and Dom. The real "bad guy" seems to be the stifling discipline of military life, which is perhaps a metaphor for life in Japan in general. Living in a country where irresponsible behavior is quite common (and being a long-time fan of military history), I must admit I couldn't get into Tylor himself all that much. My favorite character is Lieutenant Yamamoto--an ambitious, by-the-book officer, but also honorable and good at heart. I felt more sympathy for him as he endured the anarchy aboard the Soyokaze than I did for Tylor himself (Yamamoto did seem to be kind of losing it towards the end--not enough visits to the "neural neutralizer" I guess!).

Irresponsible Captain Tylor (ICT) has to deal with the same problem as all military comedies--how do you ridicule warfare without showing death and destruction (which are very un-funny)? The Soyokaze has a habit of getting all it's weaponry knocked out before it can fire a shot, yet crewmembers never seem to get seriously hurt. Sometimes we see ships exploding at a distance, but we never see anyone get hurt up close and personal. A lot of the anime I watch is described in the keywords as "action-comedy". I think subconsciously, as I watch the first few episodes of a new series, I decide whether this show seems to give the action or the comedy priority. If it's primarily "action", I expect the plot to progress in a more-or-less logical, plausible way. On the other hand, if the "comedy" has the upper hand, the plot can be excused for not making complete sense. Somehow, perhaps because I didn't find the quality or quantity of the jokes to be overwhelming, I generalised ICT as an "action first, comedy second" show. As such, the way violence was conviently avoided was unconvincing. And, needless to say, seeing Tylor go from a prisoner sentenced to death to commander in chief of the UPSF in one episode was just too much of a logical leap for me to take seriously. If it had been done in a absolutely hilarious way, on the other hand, I wouldn't have cared if it was really plausible or not. The point I'm trying to make is this--If you haven't started watching the series yet, don't expect events to occur in a particularly logical manner. Instead, think of this as a sort of parallel world in which those who are willing to buck the system are blessed with unlimited luck! In fact, we never get a firm answer to the question of whether it is luck, skill or destiny which motivates Tylor. But, that doesn't really matter. What does matter is going on a carefree romp through a world in which we can completely throw off our responsibilities without any negative repercussions. One of the handful of Japanese words I understand came from the OP sequence of ICT: "Ee-Tee-Me-Oh" -- "Let's go!".

I was intrigued with the strong reviews of this series and decided to buy the Right Stuffs English dub release, (4 DVDs, about seven episodes per DVD, 24 episodes total), and my conclusion is this is a Great Series! Now understand that this series dates back to 1993-1994 when it was first released, so the animation might not be of the current standards, but the art quality is still very good. It is the originality of the script, the distinction of the characters, and the fun and charm of the story line that makes this series outstanding, (and the Right Stuff has made an excellent selection of voices and a very strong dub script, which helps this series standout.)
Many other reviewers might want to categorize the irresponsible Justy Ueki Tylor as being a slacker or being lazy, but I find this as being a bit harsh. I see his character as being un-stressed, untraditional and unafraid to follow his own heart. Justy Ueki Tylor is always up to something, it is just not what everyone else wants or expects him to be doing, and he quickly gets branded as being very irresponsible. It is his bewildering approach to life, combined with his strange actions and decisions, which prove himself to be something of an enigma, with the devils own luck.
On a dark empty street, a man dressed shabbily in a trench coat squats, hunched over and stares at the colorful advert overhead, which says join the United Planets Space Forces and help save the humanity. Well, Justy Ueki Tylor, aged 20, stands up and marches to nearest recruitment station and joins up. When asked why he wants to join, he replies that, I would like three meals a day and a pension. And so begins the adventure of our Captain Tylor as he charms and wanders his way through an entrenched and un-resilient military system, causing havoc and confusion in his wake. The military command, at a loss of how to manage him, finally decides to doom him to be the captain in command of the most poorly staffed and un-maintained United Planets Space Forces ship in their fleet, a destroyer named the Soyokaze. With a crew that hates his guts, a command-staff that distains him and against an enemy that both dismisses him and his ship, Tylor has an adventure that can only be categorized as somewhere between delightfully improbable to outrageously impossible. Nothing can dampen this captains cool and carefree demeanor, be it having to face a mutiny of the crew, or endure being a captive of the Rylion Empress, or even facing a court-marshal with a death sentence as a reward for a guilty verdict. The irresponsible Captain Tylor always somehow manages to get things done in his own way, and in his own time, much to the delight and humor of viewers.
I found myself laughing and chuckling throughout the series at the actions and antics of both Captain Tylor and his crew. I can categorize this is a being one very whimsical, very entertaining and extremely comedic adventure story. While this series has almost no fan service, it does have a fair bit of adult innuendo, rampant dunkiness and a lot of rowdy behaviour, so this might best be considered for the PG 13+ range.
(And it does not hurt that being an older series, it more reasonable priced than some of the new stuff.)

Funny, funny stuff here. Justy Ueki Tylor is the quintessential slacker, but completely loaded with luck. How does the situation always swing his way? I don't really know, but the looks on the faces of the other charcters in the series when all their hard work and schemeing goes to nothing and Tylor comes out on top is classic comedy. I must suggest this to anyone enjoying a good poke of fun in the general direction of Star Trek and many scifi anime shows.

You guys really nailed this review already huh? Well if someone is reading this, Captain Tylor is hilarious. He reminded me of Spike and Gene Starwind with his slacker mentallity and his way of getting out of certain situations. There isn't as much action as i thought there would be for a "space opera" but the characters will more than entertain you.
The dub is amazing. This is the only series that i've seen in the last year that i prefered to watch the dub than the sub. The music wasn't anything to write home about, but the character designs were really outstanding.
While Captain Tylor is not one of my favorite anime's, it certainly gets the job done. For a lighthearted and fun series, you could really do a lot worse.

This was yet another GREAT anime! Captain Tyler, there is so much you can say about him but one thing that comes to mind is a "lives in the moment" kinda guy (to the extremes!) Also the fact that he is a genius...or maybe he is just really lucky? Well, I will let you figure that one out! BUY this anime!

You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll occasionally roll your eyes! And maybe you'll do a little thinking about war and its causes. "Star Trek with a heavy dose of M*A*S*H" is one of the best descriptions I've heard of this show. Definitely worth watching for the humor and the surprisingly lovable characters, and it leaves you with something to ponder afterward.

This series was recomened to me by friend who started watching it when it was still a fansub (poor me had to actually pay retail prices for my tapes). He told me it was the funniest thing he'd ever seen and well he was right.
I've never been a big fan of the older character designs so that was a bit of a draw back for me but I was laughing so hard I really didn't care. From Tylor's constant flirting with every female he comes across to Azalyn's claims about Paco-paco's child I was rolling around laughing (OK maybe that's a little dramatic, but this is my review so there!).
I also enjoyed the music from the show very much. "Just Think of Tomorrow" (the opening theme) has become one of my favorite songs.
On top of all of that, my favorite seiyuu, Kotono Mitsuishi, is the voice of Lt. Kim.
I only really complaint is that there are some jokes that are just too goofy, but those instances arn't too common.
All in all, go watch this, It'll be worth your time.

This is one of the most enjoyable series out there, put startrek, red dwarf, and anime together, and this is what you get. I am a huge red dwarf fan and I couldn't stop laughing at this show from the very begining. (The addition of Jason from the friday the 13th movies was hillarious) If you want a great funny series that you can watch over and over this is the perfect one go out and bye this one (I would rate this a PG-13)

Tylor is a really good light hearted and funny show. The animation and plot are nothing to write home about, but it is not suppost to be. This show set the standard for all nutty captain shows in the future.
