This site has never had advertising. I don't like advertising. Mostly. There are some things that I've thought could be useful, for instance, buy-links to retailers would be a feature.
I added limited Google text ads on the 12th of March 2005. If you're reading this you will probably never see them. They're highly targeted and highly limited.
In order to see an ad you must:
- Not have a cookie from the site.
- Not be a robot (that is, not have the user agent of a known robot nor have fetched robots.txt in the last 24 hours).
- Visit a page that doesn't otherwise have a side link bar. (Series pages are the primary example of this, at the moment).
The theory is that if you have a session then you're looking around the site -- you've shown that you aren't interested in leaving the site. There's no point in showing ads to people who are unlikely to click through.
This is producing about $1 a day's worth of click throughs.
I have some plans on buy-links and sharing click-through revenue amongst reviewers of a given title. I'll post something to the discussion forum later regarding that.
